ABOUT THE PROJECT
Space Design Architecture (SDA) was briefed by The University of Newcastle to design The Innovation Hub (The Hub), an interim space used to facilitate post-graduate and industry alliances along with student group work. Key requirements of the project included; economy, minimisation of base build works, bright and bold colours, along with adding maximum impact and usability.
SDA’s architectural approach featured a flexible breakout and seminar space, with the remainder of the ground floor given over to lively collaborative spaces and hot-desking. ‘Huddle’ spaces at the rear of the ground floor were also incorporated, which can be adapted through the use of moveable furniture and integrated white boards and digital screens. A central island bench provides an informal gathering space for lunch and refreshments, forming a physical and philosophical linking element that binds the hub together.
Adhering to the project requirements, bright yellow and lime green colours thread through the space adding vibrancy and energy. As an interim facility, all materials are designed to be easily removed at the end of the lease and existing materials were retained where possible.
Working closely with Collaborative Construction Solutions and The University of Newcastle, the project was delivered on budget and time. A great success for The Innovation Hub and the SDA team of architects who received a commendation at the Newcastle Australian Institute of Architects for the project.
